Charges Against Radio Host Star Dropped
Friday, July 28, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Criminal charges against Troi “Star” Torain – the former Power 105 disc jockey who was fired for making on-air sexual comments about a rival DJ’s daughter – are to be dropped, said the District Attorney’s office yesterday.
Torain was fired by Power’s parent company Clear Channel Radio when he made threats toward Hot 97’s DJ Envy, implying sexual abuse against his four-year-old daughter.
“I would like to do an R. Kelly on your [DJ Envy’s] seed. On your little baby girl,” Star said in May, referring to R&B singer R. Kelly who has been charged with committing sexual acts on a minor.
Clear Channel immediately deemed his comments “wholly unacceptable,” and two days later he was arrested by Hate Crime Unit detectives on child endangerment and weapons charges.
According to the District Attorney’s office, the charges will be dropped if the 42-year-old DJ agrees to perform three days of community service and stays out of trouble for six months. He was also ordered to keep his distance from DJ Envy’s family.
“I’m very, very happy the charges were dismissed,” Torain said outside Manhattan Criminal Court. “I knew I’d committed no crime.”
“It isn’t about my regretting anything I said or didn’t say. I have apologized,” he added. “But my words were misconstrued and taken out of context. There’s a big difference between mainstream talk and ‘hood talk – and that’s all this was.”
Torain also called himself a “victim,” saying DJ Envy and his partner Miss Jones had disrespected him earlier on their radio show by making fun of his parents and questioning his manhood.
“If anything, I’m a victim,” he said. “But I didn’t go running off to the police to sign a complaint.”
Prosecutors said Star was offered a deal to spare DJ Envy’s daughter from unwanted exposure, although it is uncertain if a financial settlement was part of the agreement.
