Dame Dash Works on Films, DeNiro Co-signs
Tuesday, August 1, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
After proclaiming his fill of the music industry, Damon Dash is keeping himself busy in the film world. The Harlem-born mogul announced three cinematic works-in-progress all based on the lives of controversial New York personalities.
The first film is a docudrama based on the life of Larry Davis, a 19-year-old who shot six NYPD officers in 1986 after being fed up with police corruption in his Bronx neighborhood. As a teenager Davis was reportedly hired by dirty cops to act out illegal drug deals, but he later refused resulting in a violent stand-off.
“In urban culture, Larry Davis is something of a legend,” Dash recently told Daily Variety.
Robert DeNiro (Tribeca Productions) and Jane Rosenthal (Universal Pictures) are already slated to co-produce the film.
Dash’s second project is a biopic about a female fight club in Brownsville, Brooklyn, where troubled women brawl for money in a building basement. The movie is based on actual events, and explores the turbulent lives of women on the brink.
Meanwhile his third film is based on the life of mobster Joe Stassi, the middleman between notable gangsters Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano.
“When I first got to Hollywood while focusing on music and the other businesses, I got a taste of independent films and built up a decent body of work,” Dash said.
“I’d like to hit my stride now with movies that have social relevance to the urban and New York experience.”
The co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records was first recognized in the film world for 2004’s drama “The Woodsman,” which he executively produced and starred Kevin Bacon. His recent thriller “Shadowboxer,” starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., was released last month in limited theaters.
