Jay-Z, MTV, & UN Address Global Water Crisis

Monday, August 7, 2006
By: Kenny Rodriguez

Jay ZDef Jam president Jay-Z is joining United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and MTV president Christina Norman this Wednesday to announce a joint effort aimed at educating young people on global issues.

Jay, born Shawn Carter, will be appearing in a new documentary where the multi-platinum rapper witnesses first hand the impact of the global water crisis.

More than one billion people lack access to safe drinking water, according to statistics, and water-related diseases are the leading cause of death – constituting 80% of the world’s sicknesses.

The documentary’s premiere date and other related initiatives are to be announced at Wednesday’s press conference in New York City’s United Nations.

This guy is a living legend. Coach carter does it again, another gift to the world from the ceo of hip hop. I dare y'all to name another rapper living or dead who has even come close to accomplishing the things jay has ad will do.

^^^^king james..... How bout "kool herc" the creator of the "scratch and two turntables mixing" there it is, i named one. And here's 1 more "grand wizard theodore" you wanna talk accomplishments.....then you gotta give it up to the real legends, pioneers and innovators of this hip hop thing of ours, first! where it all started__ not who's corperate america benefitting from it now. The type of respect i would give "jay z" is the same type of respect i give "micheal jordan' not as a legend or pioneer.... But one who has benifited from dr. Jay and moses malone... Etc. They knew how to make the $$$ buck spin in thier favor when the time came... But as a hip hop guy talking about the water crisis... That has nothing to do with the black problem in america. It almost seems mtv forced him to do this for some sort of political tie he's after. This dude is straight corperate now man. How bout talking about the murder rate in brooklyn going down, jay. Or the drug and alcohol abuse going on in nyc. Or the obesity and diabetic problem amongst black children. Something we can relate to. Water crisis... Lmao! wow man... I'm almost speechless. Just my thoughts... Righteous stand up.

I have to say sometimes people look at things on the world stage. There isnt much you can say about what's happening in the black community obesity and diabetic issues effect all communities now anyway all of these kids are getting fat but we all know what to do if you dont want your kid to get fat dont feed them food that's bad for them i'm sure they all can figure that out. Make them join a sport or something. And with drinking and all that man that will never change because rich and poor all do it if your a alcaholic your going to be one period be smart enough not to start. I like your other points though sair

Sair and emachine, what r yaw talkin bout? i am tired of all u people hating on my boy! what yaw sayin dont got sh*t to do w/ what they wrote about in the article. Kingjames313 is the only one making sense up here so far. And if thats a cause anyone wants to take up cause they feel its important y say something? at least that person (jay in this case) stepped up and did something about it! what did yaw do? stop hatin! it's not a good look!

Fight. For. Us !!

Sair, you are ignorant, it has everything to do with black people, because it's the foreign countries and minorities being affected...and jay z may not have "created the scratch" but he sure has opened up a lot of doors for black youth and adults in this world. Get it together

Criticizing rappers for not giving back, and when they do, criticizing them for not doing enough? "cold-blooded!" - .rick .james

J1876... Im far from ignorant bro. Just expressing how i see this article. United nations secretary general kofi-annan and mtv... Then jay z... Hmmmm. You got to see this is more of a political power move then caring for how bad the water is... Especially from jay's point of view. This man's whole career was built on bragging about how he made mtons of money off of the poor and unfortunate crack, weed and cocaine users of the world. As jay puts it. So now he's a humanitarian. Okay... What part of the game is this. Let me see. Bulding a basketball arena in brooklyn with a couple of billionaires. Opening up 40\40 clubs in thailand, tokyo, japan and london. Owning a soccer team in england. Well, sure can't knock the man's hustle, he's good. But__ to say jay is suddenly concerned about the worlds water crisis. I don't buy it. There's an angle here somewhere. It's almost like angelina jolie and brad pitt walking around with that african baby gettting papparazzi to take flicks all over the world... Just to say__ see__ we care about black poor people. Yeah right! just my thoughts. Righteous stand up.

I understand what your saying sair. But somehow i dont believe that it was a "meeting of the mynds" to decide how to get over on ppl. But whut do i know. Shyt they could have just asked him to do it and he just said.."aiight" simple as that. Its hard "for me" to see the profit, or how they (mtv, pres. Carter) are gonna werk the hustle of healthy water? it aint like 50 when he was promoting healthy food in schools just to promote his vitamin water (which "is" good as hell to me). And as far as the ole skool cats getting props...idk. I like the micheal jordan example. Jays timing "was" good....but dayem they did have a million and one other emcees dropping like he was....cant deduct points from em'. Like jay said in one of his songs...forgot the lyrics, but basically he was saying "hey, i was just rolling the dice like err'body else, cant knock me for winning".....

Kalliope4eva.... I gave you much props over at the "green latern" blog. Go check it out. As for this jay z blog... I don't know, bro... I just kinda feel like jay is on the otherside now. Not way gone but kinda distant himself a little from the hood. Once a year toys in marcy projects on christmas just don't cut it for me anymore. These new rich guys is all about how much money they can make and how powerfu they can become. Then they lose sight of whats really going on in the hood. True.. It might not have been a meeting of minds... But jay seems like a chess player.. He thinks real hard before he makes a move. He never just says "aight" he's got to find an angle for himself first. I seen him in action. He's a thinker for real. Always wants to be 5 steps ahead of you. I don't knock it.. But if falls under pride and arrogance too. And that is a deadly combination. Who can ever correct a man like that? in his heart and eyes, he's always right. You feel me. Righteous stand up!

Werd sair..i just peeped the other page...lol. If its right, it aint no way i wanna be outside the loop. But back to jigga man, i feel that (hes a thinker) and he does have a hell of a poker face. You never know whut the cat is up to (booted dame and biggs, got a office in that def jam building etc.) who knows. And anyway, my favorite vision of jay has to be "hard knock life" because he was on the block with the quarter juice and the airs on....but i guess the block got too small for him. Idk. Your right hes a business now...and its "no" money in the hood. A business man goes where the money is.

I really don't think that jay has distanced himself at all. He just doing what he feels is right and what he feels can make a change. Maybe the only thing in it for him is the fact that he's doing something positive and he's made it out of the "ghetto". Regardless of what side you think he's playing for, he's doing something positive. Maybe boycotting kristal was a fast move because words or suggestions could have been taken out of context. But one thing is for sure, jay stood up for us immediately just in case there was bullsh*t. He consitently does the annualy toy drive and gives back when he can. It just seems that whenever he does good, people look for negative things or say that he's not doing enough. He definitely does more than some so called role models out there. Hova definitely gets respect from me. I'm just waiting for him to bless us with a new album and lock down the summer of 2007!

Sair im co-signin you baby..anyways, my ppl peep real talk--->more than one billion people lack food, lack clothes, many diseases lack the respect of existence....mayne oh mayne i can run my mouth all day long like an energizer bunney. Young black women are the highest in the usa to be affected with aids, young black men crime are risin everyday..and where does some of the influence come from to reflect such consequences in the world? its ground issues these rappers are overlookin...they keep tryin to reach out to the youth but all in the wrong directions(how many young cats you know are going to be discussin this sh*t? yea its crucial but hell we gotta war goin on, theres hella crisis everywhere, but a damn water crisis?)yea okay!...okie doke...propz to jay for wantin to be apart of a major " global " issue. But its so much more and very little to start that rappers can be doin to portray a positive out look to the youth...one minute rappers are tryin to show & tell youths how to be positive donatin & shhh..the next they show & tellin theyre ice, fancy cars, b*tches & hoz, weed and cristal....too many young cats get perplex when it comes to sh*t like that. Start with home then rise...

Im not downin jay for his move..i respect the fact hes considerin to portray and perceive to a vulnerable youth a positive look, and considerin takin more postive swift ways to show his maturity differ from jigga my n*gga to button up shawn carter...but one must always think......did dude get paid to take such an action or was this move made by his own 2 feet and heart?
Posted by MsCadiGirl
And to top it all off with icing.... This dude, president of def jam... Mr. "stop the water crisis" shawn carter__ signs another gang bang murder rapper every damn month. If it's lyrics are about guns, hoes, drugs or any illegal money... You can rest assure jay is signing them to broadly brag about thier wicked endeavors. So__ i ask... Are you really trying to stop the issues going on in the ghettos... Or are you just adding to them? last comment on this. Not hating just pointing out real problem. Righteous stand up!

Lol come on........ Every one on here actin like jesus. Unless any of us is w/o flaw-why are we critizing that man. So wut if he rocks ice, or sign gangsta rappers thas irrelevant. At the end of the day wut he does is between him and his maker]im glad to see hes puttin his celebrity to good use]instead of running around on tv sounding ignorant like most rappers today. But i guess u cant plz all the people, all the time] sh*t... Mlk, malcom, garvey]all had they followers and critics]but this is what hip hop is for to give voice to the vioceless-a medium for us to seen]im tired of afro amer w/ the same pitty party bs-alot of problems here in american can be fixed]alot of times yall r ur own worse enemy. Asia, latin amer, mid east/african, etc they problems r our problems too]we all related and come from the same place]

"i put dollars on mine, ask columbine. When the twin towers droped i was the 1st in line.(that's real). Donatin proceeds on every ticket sold when i was, out on the road. That's how you judge hov. No? aint supose to be absorbed in myself. Every time there's a tradgedy i'm the 1st 1 to help. They call me this massgenist. But they don't call me they dude that take his dollars and give gifts at the projects." seems like you can't win for losin. Like i was told a long time ago..... You can please some of the ppl some of the time. But you'll never please everybody everytime.
Posted by DaReal
^^^^^cosign!!!! that's exactky what i'm talking about. You can't please everybody. There's plenty of evidence that proves that jigga is always doing his part, but there are always people out there that try to bring him down or complain that he is not doin' enough. Keep doin' your thing hov!! the haters are just dirt off your shoulder!

How can n*ggaz diss jay] wen you got dudes like laffy taffy dudes, ying yang, or the chicken noodle soup broad-or n*ggaz singin]sayin the same sh*t in a rhyme like nine times] come on stop it!

There has to come a time where we have to start holding ourselves accountable for what's going in the black community. Jay can't save the black race. The water crisis is everyone's problem. We complain about the plight of black folks but we can't relate to the plight of others...

Black album...important 1st. Read the album titles in reverse order. 2nd. Listen to the album in reverse order. 3rd. Refresh yourself with the milestones in young shawn corey carter's career... Holla back to me by posting a comment here.

Jay-z is the best legeng of the rap game what yall didnt know yall just mad that the king back
Posted by blaze nj
Well at least he's doin something semi positive besides making money off teenagers. It's always white celebritys who have to do something about the conditions in poor countries. Growing up in the project is nothing like walking a mile or so just for a daily dink of water. Even though he's wack he's tryin

Yes, jay-z can not save the world. Yes, he has done things to make the world worse. This being said, he is the truth of the us. You may hate what he says. He lived it. If you have every gone through the inner cities of america, you will know that there is no hope unless we all are as one (equal). Live your hussle and die doing it. No matter what it is, stick to it and love as you're doing it.
