Tupac's Family Reschedules South Africa Trip
Monday, September 11, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Afeni Shakur, mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur, has postponed her family's scheduled trip to South Africa, where his remaining ashes were to be spread in Soweto on the 10th
anniversary of his death.
The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation instead commemorated the occasion this past weekend in Atlanta's Peace Garden, where the public was invited to bring a plant in the memory of a
lost loved one.
The trip to South Africa is rescheduled for June 16, 2007, which coincides with the anniversary of the Soweto uprising as well as Tupac's 36th birthday.
"My family and I regret that they must postpone the trip to South Africa to a later date, due to personal reasons." Afeni Shakur said in a statement.
"We understand the work and time that everyone has put into making this trip possible, but the work of helping the children and sick of South Africa must continue."
Tupac Shakur died on Sept. 13, 1996, due to gunshot wounds inflicted from a drive-by shooting days earlier in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Meanwhile Soweto, South Africa is remembered for its 1976 anti-apartheid protests, where thousands of Black students rioted against armed police officers.
The town was held in high regard by Shakur before his untimely passing.
