Life Sentence for Shooter at 50 Cent Film
Friday, October 20, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
The man who fired a gun in a Pittsburgh movie theater - prompting a premature pulling of 50 Cent's film "Get Rich Or Die Tryin" - has been sentenced to life in prison.
Larue Taron Graves, 31, was convicted of third-degree murder for the November 2005 shooting death of Shelton Flowers, 30, at the Loews Cineplex in West Homestead, which had just finished showing a screening of 50's film.
The movie theater immediately pulled the movie, assuming the incident was sparked by violence in the film. Police later learned that the shooting stemmed from an old prison dispute.
Graves and Flowers, who were former prison rivals, ran into each other in the men's room, and an argument escalated into the lobby area where Flowers was shot twice.
Although Graves was convicted of third-degree murder - not usually grounds for a life sentence - he also faced a mandatory life sentence from a previous voluntary manslaughter conviction.
Lisa Middleman, Graves' public defender, said she plans to appeal, contending that Graves shot Flowers in the leg with no intent to kill him.
