Jay-Z says ‘Kingdom Come’ Will Not Disappoint
Monday, October 30, 2006 By: Kenny Rodriguez
As Jay-Z returns to the studio, he is out to show the nay-sayers, who claim his upcoming album “Kingdom Come” will not live up to the overwhelming hype.
“I love that position,” Jay tells XXL magazine in its upcoming December issue. “I love that challenge. That’s the reason I’m making albums. That’s the reason why I love hip-hop. It’s a challenge every time.”
The president of Def Jam also addresses the perception that he is prioritizing his own album over his former rival Nas, who Jay recently signed to the label.
“It’s not like his album is ready and I’m like, ‘No, no, Nas,’” Jay says. “It bugs me out that people really make these things up … I’m not holding Nas’ album back. His album is not ready.”
Jay-Z also discusses the breakup of Roc-A-Fella Records, and his subsequent fallout with former business partner Damon Dash – including how Def Jam offered Jay $20 million to dump Dash two years before the 2004 split. But he rejected the deal.
“You know, I couldn’t live,” Jay relates about the last days of the Roc.
“It wasn’t what it once was, in my eyes. You know, maybe I contributed to it. We all contributed … Maybe being 34, as opposed to being 26, contributed to it. It was deteriorating. It wasn’t the same thing.”
