BET Honors Hip Hop Pioneers and Poster Boys
Monday, November 13, 2006 By: Michael Ivey
Atlanta, the home of some of today's most popular rap acts, was ablaze with praise Sunday as BET honored Hip Hop's great ones.
'
"To get an award for my technological ability means a whole lot more than anything else I've accomplished in my life," said Barbados born, Bronx bred turntablist Grandmaster Flash, a pioneer of DJ cutting and mixing, who earned the 'I Am Hip Hop Icon' award. Flash is the originator behind Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, the group famous for "The Message" and "White Lines."
Arguably Atlanta's favorite Hip Hop son, T.I. received awards for best hip hop video, album, and MVP of the year. "You can't hate on hard work and talent,'' said the three-times platinum Bankhead native. "This awards show will show people a lot about where I come from." Fellow ATL native Jermaine Dupri, the architect behind popular southern snappers Dem Franchise Boyz, was honored as 2006's best producer. "For the awards to be in my city and I win something for producing, it's exciting," he said. P. Diddy took time on stage to venerate both Ed Bradley, award winning, trend setting journalist and staple of 60 Minutes, and Gerald Levert, smooth R&B/ Soul singer, who died Thursday and Friday respectively.
Host, comedian Katt Williams at one point stood, adorned in blue suit and red tie, behind a podium plastered with a sign that read "President Of The Hip Hop Nation." Williams AKA Money Mike, the recent Dipset acquisition, said "it's a good thing I was nervous. Being around hip hop helps me though, because there's a type comfort I have around these great artists." The first annual BET Hip Hop Awards airs Wednesday November 15.
