Lupe Fiasco Wastes No Time, Planning Follow Up

Thursday, January 4, 2007
By: Michael Ivey

Lupe Fisaco1st & 15th/Atlantic Records recording artist Lupe Fiasco lifts a song title from his highly praised debut for it's follow up, 'The Cool,' tentatively set for a summer release.

"There's gonna be a lot of setup and a lot of pre-production on this album, so it's gonna be in pieces," said Lupe. His long awaited September debut,' Food & Liquor,' fell victim to street and online bootleggers last spring, so he reportedly plans on laying the blueprint for 'The Cool' and recording the bulk of material in about a week to avoid a leak. Lupe’s sophomore opus reportedly will not feature big names like Jay-Z, Jill Scott and The Neptunes; most production work will be handled by 1st & 15th's in house staff. The emcee also says he'll show off a new perspective this time around.

"Jay-Z's assistant, she pulled me aside at the GQ Men of the Year thing and she was like, 'Now I know you're in the process of rebuilding,' said Lupe, who reportedly hasn't written a rhyme in months and has temporarily tuned out the Internet. "You gave everything that you had. So now you got to take the experiences that you had throughout this process; putting out the album and traveling, doing all this stuff. And now you got to tell those stories.' So it's a whole 'nother side that people are about to see, [more] experienced."

Besides depicting his own worldly excursions, Lupe wants to fill out some of the characters he says many fans may have overlooked on 'Food & Liquor.'

"People are gonna see it and be like, 'Wow, ain't that the dude from this song?," he said. "I'm building concepts now for the album. This album is gonna be a bit more streamlined and a little bit more focused, I guess you could say." However, the jazz and cartoon influenced writer does not want to make 'The cool' a "full-on story about somebody else."

"I been wrestling with how to make the concept about what I want to make the album about fit but still have enough room…where you still get all the ' what I think are — necessary ingredients to do a good, good album," he says. Lupe is up for three Grammy awards in 2007, including "Best Rap Song" for his skate anthem "Kick, Push," and is one of GQ's 2006 Men of the Year.

Lupe has a great production team, his beats are a1 so i think this time around it'll be an even better album than "food & liquor", he needs to do a song about his religion with freeway, that would be sick, i'm a christian based spiritualist (hate being part of organized religions, so i believe in god my own way with a christian's perspective) but i'm facsinated with the islamic faith and way of life, it's so humble, but i'd like to see two of islam's best rappers spit together! and his sound fits nas real good, i'd do a collab with him too and the roots! lupe is the future of lyrical hip hop!

Lupe's doing the right thing by doing something different this time around. He needs to concentrate harder this second time around to make sure that his sophmore album is perfect. The sophmore always separates the yesterday's artists from the artist with longevity.

I love lupes album..and him as an emcee but didn't it seem like the whole article was talking in circles and really didn't give us anything...he did give any concepts out...why it's called" the cool"? what did he mean more focused? he's up for a grammy maybe more than one...that's not a focused project? not blaming lupe...it's the people who do the interviews that are stupid...

I loved food & liquor. Album of the year, one of the best hip hop has produced. His double entendres with nested deep meanings were a treat whilst still delivering sounds that are pleasing to the ear. His lyrics are real. But now him not writing in a few months and having a follow up so soon definitely worries me on the potential quality. I also hope he doesn't get out of touch in any way because of his new more prolific status & to lose the concept of delivering a message or to think he has to sell millions and therefore water his lyrics down. Another fear is that he becomes captured in selling an image. But i think he is a smart guy and i saw him perform (very good performer) and he did an interview and you could tell he was a very smart guy. Hopefully it's another great one. Wish him all the best.

Lupe has the same sound that tribe called quest brought to rap. But he needs to consult people like that as producers. His album had good music on it, but it wasnt well put together. He may have wanted to reduce the number of songs, and left some songs out while adding others. Hes part of the native tongue flavor of music. The problem with young rappers is they dont get help they need from the right veterans. He raps nothing like jayz so i dont see why he would consult jayz for an album. The same thing happened to nas anyway, bad producers and bad managment. Also with his style why enlist kanye. Lupe sounds like hes from nyc, he need og producers like premiere to break him, also ali shaheed from tribe or q-tip would have interesting.

The album food and liquor is a hip hop classic hands down. Hip hop hasen't died.... It had to thrive underwater. Oh... Check out these west rappers called "people under the stairs". They also got hip hop down right

Just copped the album. One of the best i've heard in years, seriously. Lyrically he is on point, the beats/music are good to very good, and the cd gives you a lot to think about. It's nice to hear a rap cd that i can ride and listen to with my child. Usually i have to play rb due to the cursing and general vulgarity many modern artists (especially commercial rap like 50) key on. Keep on lupe! chi-town hip hop is getting better and better.

The best, i repeat: the best in the game. He's the only reason i'm still listen to hip hop. I can't wait till the cool comes out. Lupe, all day!!

Lupe fiasco is one of the best lyricists int the game today. His ability to connect hip-hop back to its roots and bring a new school flavour to is amazing. And he talks about the issues too. Hip-hop needs a rapper like him for the young brothers out there to look up to. He is the perfect example of hip-hop.
