Raekwon, Paul Wall, Kanye Discuss Blood Diamonds
Tuesday, January 16, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
“Bling’d: Blood, Diamonds and Hip-Hop,” a new VH1 documentary analyzes the seedy diamond trade in Sierra Leone, and several artists are speaking out on how the rap industry plays a major part in the ordeal.
Paul Wall, Raekwon (of Wu-Tang Clan), and reggaeton artist Tego Calderon visited West Africa over the summer to help film the documentary alongside the United Nations Development Program.
While there, they witnessed first-hand accounts of the diamond trade’s aftermath, including meeting with refugees and former children soldiers.
Back in the United States, several rappers gave their opinions on hip-hop’s fascination with “bling” – including Kanye West, Jadakiss, Big Daddy Kane, and Juelz Santana.
“It’s just ironic that what made black people feel so empowered was completely demoralizing and destroying other black people,” says West in one segment.
“Bling’d” will premier on Feb. 22 on VH1.
