DJ Drama, Employees Arrested for Racketeering
Wednesday, January 17, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
DJ Drama and several affiliates were arrested during a raid in Atlanta, GA, yesterday, which according to police reports, lead to the confiscation of almost 50,000 bootleg CDs.
DJ Drama, born Tyree Simmons, and 17 members of the Aphilliates Music Group were taken into custody when the Fulton County Swat Team raided their offices in downtown Atlanta.
According to authorities, the search sought after only DJ Drama, 28, and DJ Don Cannon, 27, who were both charged with racketeering. They are being held at the Fulton County jail without bond.
“These guys are actively advertising online,” said Matthew Kilgo of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which heavily supports anti-piracy laws in the music industry.
“They’ve got a website that they’re advertising from, that’s where you place your orders and that’s how the orders are shipped out.”
“Statistics also show that you can make up to a 90% profit just off the resale of counterfeit CDs. So there’s huge money to be made in it, and there’s no stigma attached to purchasing it.”
In addition to the CDs, which were taken as evidence and will later be destroyed, police also seized computers, recording equipment, and several cars.
Meanwhile, all links to mixtapes on the Aphilliates Music Group website (www.theaphilliates.com) have been removed.
In previous interviews, DJ Drama has denied selling bootleg material and insisted that all his CDs are legit recordings.
