Q-Tip Dropping New LP, Tribe Done For Now
Monday, January 22, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
A Tribe Called Quest front man Q-Tip has some good and bad news: the good news is he’s hard at work on a new solo LP, “The Renaissance.” The bad news: don’t expect a Tribe reunion anytime soon.
The Queens rapper announced that for his upcoming album, slated to drop sometime this year, he has put together a live jazz band.
“I wanted a hip-hop sonic feel, something pure to the sound of hip-hop with real drums, real emotion and people taking solos,” Q-Tip recently said.
“In that sense this record feels like we’re moving in a new direction … something hip-hop should do.”
When asked the possibility of A Tribe Called Quest album, Q-Tip replied the group’s reunion tour last year felt “good, like old times. We got a great response, and I was surprised to see so many young kids out.”
But as far as a Tribe album? “I don't want to say never,” he said. “But at this point, I think we’re done for now.”
There is currently no release date for “The Renaissance,” but it will be released via Universal Motown.
