The Roots Already Working On Next Album
Monday, February 12, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Just six months after their Def Jam debut “Game Theory,” the Roots are planning another full-length album.
“We are using a lot of synthesizers, but I don't know if I could call this the electronic album or not,” drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson told Billboard.
“Pretty much five or six songs are done, and four of them are synth-heavy.”
?uestlove added that he isn’t intimidated by the lackluster sales of “Game Theory,” which sold 61,000 copies in its first week and only 113,000 since. He points to Def Jam president Jay-Z who also saw a relative dip in sales.
“Even my president with a $20 million campaign has a victory at 1.3 million copies,” he says, referring to Jay-Z’s latest LP, “Kingdom Come.”
“We knew this album [“Game Theory”] was going to have as much to do with the marketplace as Barbra Streisand on the soul charts. But the way I look at it, this is definitely a return to form for us. Critics say we got our mojo back and our fan base agreed. That’s really all we were concerned about.”
The Roots’ album will be dropping either in October 2007 or February 2008.
In related news, ?uestlove is also working on legendary singer Al Green’s upcoming release, which has been two years in the making.
