Jay-Z Sells Rocawear Brand For $204 Million
Wednesday, March 7, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
It was announced yesterday that Jay-Z is selling his Rocawear clothing label for $204 million to the Iconix Brand Group, a company that licenses and markets such brands as Joe Boxer, Candies, Mudd, and London Fog.
According to reports, if the Rocawear brand meets certain performance requirements over the next few years, the deal could also give Jay an additional $35 million in Iconix stock.
“Iconix is pioneering a new brand management model, and by combining Rocawear with their platform, my team and I can focus on our strengths in design and lifestyle marketing,” Jay-Z said, who co-founded the label in 1995 alongside Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke.
Under the agreement, Jay-Z will continue to oversee all product development, marketing and licensing for Rocawear, which reportedly earns over $700 million in annual retail sales.
In related news, Iconix and Jay-Z have also reached a deal to form a brand management/licensing company that will debut a new luxury brand titled, “The Shawn Carter Collection,” due in stores in 2008.
