Eminem To Testify in Ireland Over 2005 Concert
Thursday, March 8, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Ireland’s High Court has issued a request for Eminem to come to Dublin to explain his last-minute cancellation of a 2005 concert, as concert promoters seek $2 million from insurance companies.
Eminem pulled out of the Sept. 17 show, which was part of the Anger Management tour, after complaining of “exhaustion.”
When first announced, the 80,000 tickets for the open-air performance had sold out within an hour.
MCD, the concert’s promoters, are seeking $2 million compensation from three London-based insurance companies when they refused to pay up after the cancellation.
Eminem asked that he be allowed to give his testimony in private regarding his state of health at the time of the concert, but Justice Peter Kelly refused the application, saying it would be inappropriate.
The judge said that there was a constitutional mandate that justice be administered in public, adding that Eminem’s testimony was “possibly crucial” in settling the dispute.
The annual concert in Slane Castle has traditionally been one of the highlights of the live calendar in Ireland, dating back to 1981, when Thin Lizzy and U2 headlined.
