Monday, March 19, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Mixtape Inc. is releasing the self-titled film, “Mixtape Inc. The Movie,” a DVD documentary focusing on the history of the mixtape movement and its impact on the hip-hop industry.
With interviews from Kanye West, Young Buck, Chuck D, Lil’ Jon, Danger Mouse, DJ Kay Slay, DJ Red Alert, and several other artists, the DVD takes an in-depth look at how the mixtape circuit has turned into a multi-billion dollar business.
“We’re doing a documentary about the entire mixtape universe - the culture, the product, the people that’s centered around it, nationally and internationally,” says director Walter Bell.
In one segment, the film looks at 50 Cent’s series of mixtapes released before his major label debut, “Get Rich Or Die Tryin” (2003), which generated over $20 million in revenue.
“Basically we’re trying to lock down something that's historically significant,” says Bell. “Something like ‘Wild Style’ that kids can look back at 10, 20 years from now. War games have existed for a long time; mixtapes became hip-hop’s war games.”
The DVD is scheduled to be released on May 22.
