[Update] Anti-Yayo March Expands, HSAN Pulls Out
Monday, April 2, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Although Russell Simmons and the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network have pulled out, today’s scheduled “Call to Action and Public Grievance” march in Manhattan -- sparked by rapper Tony Yayo’s alleged assault of a teenager – is still scheduled to go on.
Tony Yayo is accused of slapping and pushing the 14-year-old son of Jimmy “Henchmen” Rosemond, the CEO of Czar Entertainment.
Rev. Al Sharpton, the victim’s mother Cynthia Reed, and various community leaders will be participating in the march, including the family of Israel Ramirez, the bodyguard who was gunned down last year at Busta Rhymes’ “Touch It” video shoot.
“I’m disgusted and emotional,” said Stephanie Hires, mother of Israel Ramierz.
“Upon hearing that an innocent child was assaulted for wearing a shirt, following the death of Israel Ramirez who was innocently killed for doing his job, I am coming forward now to ask -- when will this nonsense stop?”
The public rally in Manhattan will follow a 10:15 a.m. press conference to be held at 1755 Broadway.
Russell Simmons and Dr. Benjamin Chavis of the HSAN were originally scheduled to participate in the rally, but have since decided to pull out.
“HSAN is impartial and will not take sides in this dispute,” the group explained in a statement released on Sunday.
“Russell Simmons and Dr. Benjamin Chavis hope the issues between Tony Yayo and Jimmy Henchman and Czar Entertainment will be resolved peacefully and as soon as possible.”
