Jay-Z, 40/40 Face Lawsuit From Unpaid Employees
Friday, May 25, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
The 40/40 Club, partly owned by rap mogul Jay-Z, has been hit with a lawsuit alleging waiters, bartenders and other employees have short-changed.
Celeste Williams, a former waitress at the club, accuses the 40/40 of paying employees below minimum wage, keeping a percentage of workers’ tips, and refusing overtime pay.
The suit seeks unspecified damages and estimates for over 100 staffers who claim to have been treated unfairly.
Ron Berkowitz, spokesman for the Manhattan nightspot, said 40/40 has not yet been served with papers, and added that the allegations are false. Club management has also disclosed that Williams only worked at 40/40 during four days in December 2005.
