Jay-Z, Dame Dash Face ‘State Prop’ Lawsuit
Wednesday, May 30, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
More money, more problems for Jay-Z – a Philadelphia author has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the hip-hop mogul over his 2002 film, “State Property.”
On May 8, writer Antonne Jones filed a lawsuit in Manhattan against Jay-Z, Damon Dash, and Lionsgate Films claiming the plot of his book, “The Family: A Philadelphia Mob Story,” was used without permission for the Roc-A-Fella film starring Beanie Sigel.
In the suit, Jones says he pitched his script to both Jay-Z and Dash several years earlier, but never heard back from them after later turning down a $50,000 offer for rights to the plot.
This comes just days before Celeste Williams, a former waitress at Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club, accused the New York nightspot of short-changing its workers – including paying employees below minimum wage and withholding overtime pay.
Williams’ complaint alleges that over 100 other employees are expected to join the lawsuit.
