[Update] Remy Ma Arrested, Pleads Not Guilty
Tuesday, July 17, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Remy Ma pleaded not guilty to attempted murder on Sunday for the shooting of a female friend in lower Manhattan.
After her arraignment the Bronx rapper, born Remy Smith, was freed on $250,000 bail.
On Saturday morning, police responded to a 911 call and found a 23-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her lower torso in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.
Three blocks away, officers discovered an abandoned Cadillac Escalade owned by Remy Ma which had crashed into a park car.
The victim, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, was hospitalized in stable condition at nearby St. Vincent Hospital.
Later that night, Remy Ma turned herself in and was charged with attempted murder, assault, and weapon possession.
The victim told the New York Daily News that she and Remy Ma are close friends, and that the dispute was over missing money.
According to Barnes-Joseph, they left a downtown bar around 3:40 a.m. and entered Remy Ma’s vehicle. Remy then allegedly accused her of stealing $3,000, ordered her to dump out her purse, and shot her.
“All I heard was the gun go off,” Barnes-Joseph said. “I couldn’t believe she shot me!”
Barnes-Joseph added that even as she sat in the car bleeding, Remy continued to search through her things for the missing cash.
“What hurts me is that when she shot me she went over and dumped the bag,” she explained. “She didn't even say, ‘Oh my God, I just shot her.’ That's what hurt me so much.”
The rapper’s attorney has “adamantly” denied Barnes-Joseph’s allegations.
“I ask everyone to keep an open mind,” said Scott Leemon, her attorney. “Things are not always as they seem.”
