talib kweliNew releases by artists Talib Kweli and Swizz Beatz reached the Billboard’s Top 10 this past week, although both album sales were nowhere close to Disney Channel’s “High School Musical 2” soundtrack which topped the charts.

Talib Kweli’s “Ear Drum” debuted at the No. 2 spot with 60,000 copies sold. As Kweli’s third solo album, this is the first time the Brooklyn rapper has reached the Top 10.

All of these parents go out and cop these high school musical cd's for their kids. Kids don't go burn them, they get'em off of itunes, which adds to album sales. I downloaded kweli weeks before it came out then went and bought it the day it dropped. Most people nowadays just download hip hop and never goes to buy the album. With that being said 60k copies is good for kweli, because people keep downloading his stuff and not spending 10 bucks on a cd. They'd spend $20 on some henny and that is gone that night. The kweli cd will still be there to bump.

It is not just hip hop that is dead, it is music in general that is dead. When an album aimed toward children 5 to 11 years old hits the top of the billboard charts that should be a wake up call to all artists. In the 50's, no children's musical would've outsold elvis. In the 60's, this wouldn't have happened to the beatles. In the 70's this wouldn't have happened to james brown. In the 80's any metal band would've easily outsold high school musical. Hell, any hip hop group worth a damn (gmf and the furious 5, run dmc, etc.) would've outsold it and hip hop wasn't selling worth sh*t back then. In the 90's 2pac, nas, rakim, krs, etc. Would've outsold a crappy musical. Today, the artists that have the ability to outsell high school musical (talib, common, mos def, brother ali, the entire def jux roster, wu tang, etc.) get pushed to the side or get very little promotion while the people that are bringing down the genre as a whole are being promoted to the fullest. And even with the little push they do get it does a lot which should show the industry something. For example, look at aesop rock. He got promoted for 1 week by mtv and his album made #50 on the billboard charts above many much more well known candy ass rappers! do you all get it! we need to stand up and dictate what we want to listen to, not these record companies. Long live hip hop, now let's get it out of the duct tape that has it stuck to the chair in rap's lair where it has been held captive since 2000!
