Nas Show in Canada Cancelled, Reasons Unclear
Tuesday, September 4, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Nas has been pulled from a “Rock The Vote” concert in Canada as organizers cite various reasons, including a policy against all hip-hop acts and protests against violent lyrics.
The Queensbridge rapper was set to perform in Ottawa on Oct. 1 during an event to encourage concertgoers to vote in upcoming elections.
However two weeks after he was confirmed, organizers announced he has been banned from the venue.
According to Canadian news sources, there are several reasons behind the event’s cancellation including a blanket policy banning all hip-hop performances.
Several organizers have explained that the venue, The Congress Centre Room, is not built for a musical act.
Yet others insist that the cancellation is due to several of Nas’ songs which promote gun violence.
Similar complaints arose in Blacksburg, Virginia, where Nas is scheduled to perform at Virginia Tech University on Thursday, Sept. 6.
Several families of shooting victims protested against the rapper, citing tracks like his 1999 song “Shoot Em Up” which includes the chorus: “Shoot ‘em up, just shoot ‘em up / Kill, kill, kill / Murder, murder, murder.”
Despite complaints, Nas is still slated to perform at Virginia Tech.
