U.S. Congress To Address Misogyny In Rap Music

Thursday, September 6, 2007
By: Kenny Rodriguez

capitol hillHip-hop is finally headed to the White House: unfortunately it’s not for a good reason.

The U.S. Congress has announced an unprecedented hearing to address the misogyny prevalant in rap music and videos, particularly against African-American women, as several record executives are being asked to explain the rationale behind the music.

The hearing, tentatively scheduled for Sept. 25, hopes to question top figures from major conglomerates which oversee companies such as MTV, BET, Def Jam Recordings, and Interscope Records.

“I want to engage not just the music industry, but the entertainment industry at large to be part of a solution,” said Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, which will hold the hearing.

“I want to talk to executives at these conglomerates who’ve never taken a public position on what they produce. But it’s been surprisingly very difficult to get them to commit to appearing.”

Witnesses expected to attend include Philippe Dauman of Viacom, Doug Morris of Universal Music Group, and Edgar Bronfman Jr. of Warner Music Group.

So far, only one hip-hop artist has committed to appear – Master P, multi-platinum selling rapper and founder of No Limit Records.

The rap mogul, born Percy Miller, recently gave up his former brand of gangsta rap to record more positive music, including the profanity-free album “Hip-Hop History” which debuted earlier this week.

According to Rush’s spokesman, the witness list is still being developed. Meanwhile, the hearing is tentatively titled, “From Imus To Industry: The Business of Stereotypes and Degradation.”

The Illinois representative added that this is “not an anti-artist hearing, or anti-music, or anti-youth hearing.”

“I respect the First Amendment, but rights without responsibility is anarchy, and that’s much of what we have now. It’s time for responsible people to stand up and accept responsibility.

Why are they having a congressional hearing on hip hop music while we are still having an energy crisis and troops are still in iraq. Doesn't the government waste enough money without spending more by holding a hearing about why it's ok to say Bia'ch and ho in a song.

Its good they exposing these rich record execs who make $$$ off this nonsense - doubt it's going to change anything, but whateva

They did this sh*t when snoop came out wit doggystyle didnt they?

Congress need to announce an unprecedented hearing on bush spending habits. Why do he need so much money for the war in iraqi?

I agree that some of this r&b(rappin bsh--) needs to disappear. However, they need to concentrate on the more important issues. And let rappers whom are majority blacks, make their cheddar. Certain peoples in the govenment really do not want to see black people rise to the rich class. So here is something(hip hop) else they have to control.

Wow so stupid, many worse things are happening in the world and they want to have a meeting about rap music ? thats just dumb.

Sumthin else to take the public eye of the war in iraq and afghanistan, to take attention of failing city schools, lack of medical benefits, and the corruption in our highest branch of government. Look we need to focus on better things than wat music is being made and wat it says. Music is freedom of expression more and more has this government become overbearing on such meaningless crap.

I don't see why people make a big deal out of this and worrying that the govt. Is banning rap, the outcome of all dis is dat were only gonna hav hip-hop censored, and then that would mean more creativity, than people just talking bout hos, clips, chips and the drug game, i find it better imo itll add more originality. Even if the govt. Takes the rap section from the counters of fye, you still got the chinese shops to buy them bootlegged. Hip-hop is a way of life not just music. And i doubt they would cuz the govt. Taxes everything so you know that every record that ti or 50 makes, some portion of it is still going to the nations economy by the system of stocks and taxes, den eventually to bush's racist ass to fund the armed forces and get the people from our community killed.

Make em say uggghhhhhh, na na na na! that was my joint!

Why???????? shouldnt they be worried about more important things? and why just rap? maybe they should have a thing on why some forms of rock music make kids kill themselves....

............our government is multi-faceted, like most. They can balance the exterior as well as the internal problems within its borders..... Not with the precision we would like by along shot..... But the fact that there are many problems to be addressed, makes the attempt at handling different situations a valid and nobel one, not to mention a damn necessary one as well..... There's always things going on in the world, that's no reason not to swat that fly hubbering around your face, no matter how small he maybe....

^^our gov't is multi-faceted,i agree with u there..they can lie about wmd's in iraq and the real reason so-called terrorists hate us at the same time they are helping these "terrorists" take out our other new enemy:iran....oh if they could fix our internal problems within the border then how is it that "19 hijackers living in the us crashed planes into the twin towers" according to their own story...nah bro this is simply about rap's declining sales so now they finally have their chance to go after it

........every form of entertainment is in decline, but most aren't being attacked because of a lack of motive.... Hip hop has become unrealistic in its topics; not all mind you, but still effectively dismantling to our social structure.... It has become a place for social mistakes to hide, and develop false identities & false arguements on why they are still acting like kids, even though they're in their mid 20's & 30's.....
Posted by evenwhenilie
Its good that this situation is getting handled but this is not the time and place for it ... The reason half naked women are used so much in hip hop is the same reason half naked women are used in beer commercials, magazines, etc. -- cuz it sells. Naa it aint good/right but it is what it is ...

"F*ck them in their ass, and throw them off of a bridge...." ..........quote from biggie, refering to little kids..... Explain. Explain the obvious glorification of drug selling....... Let's forget the question if rap music has a negative effect on its listeners, look at the artists who rep hip hop, and promote beef, even to the point of violence amongst themselves...... Explain. .....i don't mean to say there is no explanation, but this article comes weeks after another topic was posted here on nbs, the one about should hip hop be explained by its own scholars or not..... Most here argued against it.... Saying that hip hop shouldn't be put in a box and examed, and given boundries and thus, explained.... It looks like we are going to have to do just that..... But in the end, i think this will make hip hop whole again.....

I'm not against hip hop being criticized at all..but by people who give a F*ck and grew up on it and has seen what has happen to it, not by some 40yr. Old suit and tie white male(no disrespect intented) who profits off of wars in foreign countries..once again we gonna have someone else speaking about our culture and what's wrong with it without proper context

Yo this is stupid, this is becoming completely ridiculous. The government to tryin to control what people say when over two hundred years ago they gave the right to freedom of speech. F*ck this country they need to worry about the stupid dept that they have accumulated for a bullsh*t war over oil, not what some black dude is sayin to make a livin.

Yes there is a lot of stuff going on in the world which may seem that it should take presence, but at the same time this is affecting our kids especially in a time where a lot of parents not raising there kids with morals and not teaching them how to be responsible and videos and music is a big influence on these young kids and adults. If you look at what's being played (major station) it's not too much postive upbring material out there. I think it should be a good balance not every song should be about rims, jewelry, strippers and getting faded.

Good, about time! i hope they ban all these wack ass emcee's like ti, lil wayne, young dro, young joc, pretty much every lil n*gga and every young n*gga with no hip hop history, lets go back to 88'-94' hip hop when everything was about being creative and lyrical. Hip hop

Tiger, its time for a change, its about time, and we as a race cant figure that out than might as well have the gov'ment do it we should be disgraced that someone else has to think for us and make a change, lol, dont support negativity, there some good rappers but on the real, im tired of hearing, n@@@ this n@@@ that, and kill him, rob, shoot that n@@@, f@ck that ho, its old man, real old

I could have sworn that rock and country music do the same sh*t!!
Posted by getoffmyjock.com
@prince hall.... I agree... It's time for a change... I remember a time when artists put out material worth listenin too rather than horrible snap dances (look like they're goin in a coma) or another artist (north/south/east/west) rappin' about a hairbrush.... Shiiioooot, if i play it right, i can rap about a bike, make up a wack dance step, and go double uranium lol.... Where's the creativity? tired of bubble gum rap...

Sides that, i'm one of the few at my college that listens to artists (i.e. Common, mos def) who spit knowledge... And i'm an 80's baby!!

Let me just start by sayin F*ck the gov you F*ck*n crooked ass cop rappin kids profittin your missles in F*ck*n tea & china!!!! *now back to the subject @ hand* you can not take rap away, it's futile for example we black people have entered a new age of computers to sell music on & amazon, not to mention like he said sell it out your car or shop (private shop that is) plus it will only drive us stronger to work together, which we will because we are all working towards the same goal of hip hop & as long as the worlds spinning we black people alway will stick together if it affect the whole race in general, even though we kill each other, we still all love each other in the game & would rather put our differences aside to save what our ancestors gave us, because it our way of giving back, & yes hip hop is a little blunt but @ the same time its what's got us to this point you wouldnt have a job it it wasnt for hip hop because we give you the money sales not to mention if it never existed we wouldnt be here 2day talking bout this now or our kids would not learn a valuable lesson because nobody is educating them there for we rap to open another world beyond imagination to explore topic we could do ourselfs, i mean how many ppl in here have just walked to there parents & say "teach me bout sex, drugs & all that" so we give that debate of topic even if its bad you have the ability to educate yourself from right to wrong there for the rapper is not resonsible but only there person who chose to use the

This is a waste of time, F*ck this sh*t, oh b4 i 4get, master p is still alive??? thought that n*gga died after listenin to his good 4 nothin records, F*ck him too

It makes me mentally sad to hear such words like n***a,h*e,b***h...we need positivity in this world and we need to plant flowers so we can breathe fresh air
Posted by INTERNET GANGSTA TRIPLE O.G. BULLDOG
I think that though there are a lot of other more urgent things could be attacked, this is still important. Some of the other things that are issues can be cut, by just solving this one issue. Either way, big or small, it is an issue that we as a society posses, and we need to do something about it....

First amendment b!tches! can't do sh!t bout that....tryin fvck up what lil bit of sh!t we got goin for ourselves...hip hop has produced more jobs than any other rap genre! so fvck congress, the white house and all those who oppose freedom of fvckin speech! fvck all yall who oppose what the fvck i just said and svck uh phat d!ck!

For all of u who posted a comment if u have not live in the projects or any ghetto of some sort this subject is foriegn to u so dont wastes your time because u cant relate to hip hop u dont no the struggle and what if feels like for a rapper to take the words out of your mouth for all u lames who dont understand what that mean for a rapper to say what u feel or paint a picture of a situation that u have encounter in your life and just for the rapper to deliver the message to the rich an the wealthy about the everyday struggles in the hood or the ghetto you feel like u owe them so u buy their cd or album because if they didnt continue talk about the struggle u rich an wealthy m****f*** would act like it dont exstist but yet still they ignore the message and the message would`nt be heard nor felt without the violent lyrics because in the violent lyrics you feel the pain, stuggle and joy that the rapper have encounter in his/her life thats why we all is brother from another mother cause we all have had the struggle real struggles that's why aslong as theirs a ghetto u cant kill this so congress y'all can stop trying its bigger than u if u want the answer go into the projects or the ghettos an help so the kids can see another way until thats happens which i know never will hip hop is forever it here to stay.

Apparently, the person who just wrote that last comment is a rapper. Lol he or she sounds very biased and needs to get their facts straight, the white house is not referring to all rap songs, just the ones that are promoting violence and the ones that are promoting drug use... Hers an example... The beginning of the song tipsy: j-kwon lyrics "tipsy" [intro:] teen drinking is very bad. Yo i got a fake id though. That doest sound very good.
