Mos Def Rallies For Jena Six, Joins Local Leaders
Wednesday, September 12, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Mos Def is joining community leaders to support six Black teenagers who face criminal charges for allegedly beating up a White student in a racially-charged section of Jena, Louisiana.
The Brooklyn artist, who recently appeared on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” spoke candidly about the controversial incident, calling on everybody from “Will Smith to Jay[-Z]” to help out in anyway possible.
According to reports, six Black high schoolers – dubbed the “Jena Six” – were initially charged with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly assaulting a fellow White student.
The fight occurred last December in Jena High School – where months earlier nooses were hung in its schoolyard after a Black student sat under the “White tree,” which students deemed a Whites-only area.
Earlier this week, Mos Def wrote an open letter asking “African-Americans of influence, and all concerned parties” to join him in the “fight against racial inequality and show solidarity for these young people, who are being treated very harshly by the law.”
The rapper/actor will attend a Sept. 20 rally to protest the sentencing of one of the six students, Mychal Bell, who has already been found guilty of aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy charges.
Bell, who is 17 years old, may face up to 22 years in prison.
