Wednesday, September 19, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
The results are in … Kanye West’s “Graduation” toppled over 50 Cent’s “Curtis” on the U.S. charts this past week, with ‘Ye moving a remarkable 957,000 units in only six days – making it the biggest music debut in over two years.
Meanwhile, 50 Cent reached the No. 2 spot with 691,000 copies sold.
“It feels overwhelming,” Kanye told the Associated Press on Tuesday afternoon.
“Everyone is coming up to me and telling me how proud they are of me.”
“We’re not gloating,” added Jay-Z, rapper and president of Def Jam Recordings. “He’s celebrating his win … In his mind, he believed he could win the whole time.”
“Graduation” saw the largest debut by any release since 50 Cent’s “The Massacre,” which sold 1.1 million copies during its first week in March 2005.
West’s previous album, “Late Registration” released in August 2005, was the last album to surpass 800,000 copies in its first week, moving approximately 860,000 units.
Yet despite their rivalry, the real winner of the feud is Universal Music Group – the world’s biggest record company, to which both Kanye (Def Jam) and 50 Cent (G-Unit/Interscope) are signed.
