Mos Def Calls Out Artists Over ‘Jena Six’

Tuesday, September 25, 2007
By: Kenny Rodriguez

mos defMos Def – who is currently in Louisiana rallying in support of the “Jena Six” students – expressed anger over the seemingly lack of response in the hip-hop community.

“Shame on everybody who’s not here,” the Brooklyn rapper told MTV News, referring to the Sept. 20th demonstration in Jena, Louisiana.

“I’m f*cking mad. I’m disappointed to always be coming to these things and it’s only one or two people [from the music industry here]. If you ain’t gonna use your voice, then be quiet. I’m disappointed and ashamed.”

Community leaders voiced outrage over the trial of six Black teenagers, who initially faced attempted-murder charges last year for the beating of a White student.

Bun B, of the rap duo UGK, also appeared at the rally after reportedly driving over from Port Arthur, Texas.

“I grew up right next to a town where it’s strictly White people,” Bun said.

“I’ve been privy to these small incidents of violence in these all-White towns. We were blessed to find out about the Jena Six and were blessed to try to make some type of impact in this community before things went too far.”

When you think about how "hot" the south is now and this incident did happen in the south, it is quite disappointing.

This is the type of event where you find out who is real. Who actually cares about the next generation in hip-hop. My wife and i have been sitting around wondering when someone was going to publicly put these rap artist on notice. Just like their tired raps; they only care about the $$ & girls. Thx mos.

Mos is definately the homeboy i was expecting to call out the rap industry. Now, dead prez, kweli, the roots, immortal technique, k'naan, you know... The only rappers with nutz, should stand up and protest this bullsh*t. Strike ice, ask anyone that is a die-hard hip-hop and you'll see that hip-hop is about expession and freedom of speech. Nwa did it. Pe did it. Dead prez are doing it. Now, it's time for all the others to stop talking about irrelevent crap, and cause some heat on the government. Now is our chance people! the government is weak right now, we are causing so much heat on them, that if they don't wanna ruin their image more than it already is, they gotta do something about this issue. Let's get real people. Without a people's army the people have nothing!

That's just my opinion.

Hmmmm......first draw the yellow line down the spine of their backs then first-degree assault and 10 years for each "thug"...lol....makes me wanna vomit...noone owes them anything dammit

All i got to say is thank you mos def, for doing wat you do. Oh yeah and also calling everybody esle out. You are always that real dudhe. One!!!!
Posted by Woods
......mos def should be the poster boy for what's expected out of a hip hop artist...
Posted by evenwhenilie
The part that kills me is when someone blames hip-hop as the reason someone did something negative the artist are quick to defend the hip-hop community, but when something like this occurs, no one has anything to donate or say. Shame on them!! props to mos def and bun b for showing support!!

Str8 up! i was there! i agree with mos def. Where were they? all these so called artists who "represent the streets" and the "hood"?! it is time to start calling names in the industry. These are the same artists who always screamin on police brutality and justice and they were no where to be found. Surely, they could have been there or at least more vocal about the situation. There was a time when if you were black and had money it was automatic to show up for the cause. Now, it is the opposite. What a shame...

I couldn't agree with mos def more, all of these rappers should be ashamed of themselves! all these commercial a$$ rappers, talking about " i got all this money", and "look at my car, and my chain they just shining", or whateva! they can talk about all of that, but when their community needs them the most, they punk out and don't wanna have nothing to do with it or say nothing! where's lil wayne, where's baby, where's juvenile, b.g, mannie fresh, master-p, lil boosie, webbie, foxx, all of these rappers talking bout wipe me down, and all of that, where they at? they talk all this mess about freedom of speech, and yet when it comes time for them to talk, they wanna stay silent! help is needed, not just in jena, but all over! our brothers and sisters are dieing in these streets, our public school system's are a joke, we have corrupt politicians, and police officers running rampant in our country, and most of these rappers want to stay silent on these things and instead use their god given voices to talk about the latest bently they purchased or the latest chain they purchased from jacob the jelwer?! give me a break, that's why i don't even listen to that crap they be spittin because its nonsense, and it keeps making us look bad and making us look like the buffons that the white man wants us to be! all of these so called rappers out here are nothing but slaves, all they do is record crap, sell some records to the niave people that will buy them, and give their money to the record companies, in a nut
Posted by BlaqueReign
Some people gotta work some people dont care some people are busy some people have families oh well, no one has to be there. Wonder what the aftermath for the people who actually live in jena is
Posted by rick
People just don't know.... I grew up not even 20 miles from jena and just to let yall know this kind of stuff happens all the time when i was in school 10 years ago the same stuff was happenin back then and i know jena is not the only place where things like this happen. People open your eyes it don't even matter if any rapper shows up. What is more important is that we need to all come toghter and fight this type of racism. They called us nickkas back then and they still do today so open your eyes youngblood and see whats going on in your world
Posted by Jay
i would like to know why there isn't more rapper's showing suppose for the jena 6 what if it had happen in their home town would it be a different tune then? this is a new day and age black folks are no longer going to lay down.
Posted by LadyG
Mos def is real i feel him.
Posted by Dre bloodz
Common was shouting out about it at acl. I'm sure mos knew.

It seems like most of you have failed to notice that someone was beaten, and nearly killed. Let the justice system do it's job, if the six on trial are guilt they deserve to be punished, black, or white.
Posted by JASON
They do, but not 2 those extents if you have "failed to notice" dont reply i dont come here often-koldblooded @ last.fm
