Mobb Deep’s Prodigy Begins Gun Trial In NY
Monday, October 8, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy was in court on Thursday for a gun possession charge after police arrested him and producer The Alchemist last year.
Authorities say Prodigy, born Albert Johnson, was pulled over in downtown Manhattan after he was spotted driving in the opposite direction on a one-way street in an attempt to claim a parking spot.
Two officers testified that when they stopped his vehicle on Oct. 26, 2006, they saw Prodigy place his hand near an open console, which allegedly had a loaded, unlicensed .22 caliber handgun.
Prodigy, who claims he was unaware that a gun was in the compartment, is scheduled to begin his defense tomorrow.
The rapper already has two previous convictions, and may face up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.
Meanwhile, gun charges against The Alchemist have since been dropped.
