Nas’ New LP Titled ‘N*gger’ Draws Controversy
Friday, October 19, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
It’s official – Nas has titled his forthcoming album “Nigger,” despite objections from civil rights leaders and rumors of disapproval from his Def Jam record label.
Although the LP hasn’t hit stores yet, several community activists have begun speaking out against its controversial title.
“The title using the ‘N’ word is morally offensive and socially distasteful,” said civil rights activist Jesse Jackson in a statement to Fox News.
“Nas has the right to degrade and denigrate in the name of free speech, but there is no honor in it. Radio and television stations have no obligation to play it, and self-respecting people have no obligation to buy it. I wish he would use his talents to lift up and inspire, not degrade, making a mockery of racism.”
The Queens rapper has responded to critics, and explained he initially wanted to use the title for his previous album, “Hip-Hop Is Dead.”
“I’m a street disciple; I’m talking to the streets,” Nas told MTV News.
“Stay out of our business. You ain’t got no business worrying about what the word ‘nigger’ is or acting like you know what my album is about without talking to me. Whether you in the NAACP or you Jesse Jackson. I respect all of them … I just want them to know. Never fall victim to Fox [News]. Never fall victim to the sh*t they do.”
“What they do is try to hurry up and get you on the phone and try to get you to talk about something you might know about yet. If Cornell West [activist and professor at Princeton University] was making an album called ‘Nigger,’ they would know he’s got something intellectual to say.”
“To think I’m gonna say something that’s not intellectual is calling me a ‘nigger,’ and to be called a ‘nigger’ by Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is counterproductive, counter-revolutionary.”
“We’re talking power from the word,” Nas added, explaining he wants to strip away its heavy connotation.
He also mentioned that the LP is two weeks from completion, and will feature production by DJ Toomp, Diddy, Jermaine Dupri, and long-time collaborator Salaam Remi who was behind “Made You Look” and “Thief’s Theme.”
“Nigger” is slated to hit stores on Dec. 11th.
Meanwhile, Nas will be releasing a “Greatest Hits” compilation on Nov. 6th,
which includes his latest song, “Surviving The Times.”
He is also slated to appear on Jay-Z’s upcoming project, “American Gangster,” dropping on Nov. 4.
