Wednesday, November 7, 2007 By: Michael Ivey
43 year old black man Kenneth Anthony Wilson, of Dekalb, GA, has officially been charged with vandalizing the Tupac Amaru Shakur statue in front of the Atlanta arts center named for the assassinated poet.
It was originally reported that someone hung a noose around the statue, however, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution the item is a cross tied to a string. Talk of a potential hate crime charge is being quieted because Dekalb Police spokesperson Mekka Parish says investigators have found no evidence of racial motivation. Wilson is charged with second degree criminal damage to property and is beingdetained on $1,500 bond.
The Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts was vandalized the morning of October 20, as leaflets reading tirades about Hurricane Katrina and various rappers, along with the aforementioned string/rope, were stuck to the Tupac statue.
“Hate comes in all colors and genders therefore we will use this act of hate and ignorance to bring our community together and to pray for the healing of those who harbor such feelings,” said Tupac’s mother and executor of his estate, Afeni Shakur,
following the incident. The Center is scheduled to hold its’ 2nd Bi-Annual Film Screening November 10.
