New Jay-Z Brand Deals Accompany ‘American Gangster

Thursday, November 8, 2007
By: Michael Ivey

Jay-ZJay-Z is reportedly set to develop and market men's and women's cosmetic products through an exclusive global licensing agreement with Elizabeth Arden. The deal allows the latter company to capitalize on the market Jay-Z consolidated via Rocawear. The hip hop mogul last year sold the urban clothing line to Iconix Brand Group for a reported $250M.

The venture with Elizabeth Arden comes on the heels of Jay-Z’s tenth solo album release, November 6 (‘American Gangster’).

Three dates remain on his brief ‘American Gangster’ tour and the emcee is through Sirius Satellite Radio replacing "Hip Hop Nation" with "Jay-Z Nation.” The week long set features music from the new album, old tracks, as well as commentary on his personal hip hop favorites. Exclusive concert footage from the Los Angelos leg of the tour is also featured.

‘American Gangster’ Tour (Remaing Dates)

11/9 Baltimore - Ramshead Live
11/11 New York - The Hammerstein Ballroom
11/12 Philadelphia - The Fillmore

Jay z has become a walking brand at this point and he's managed to accomplish what every emecee should aspire to achieve, which is ownership, merchandising and branding. He's taken what he's learned from the streets, what he witnessed and/or has done himself and applied those same principles to corporate america, and you can't knock anybody for learning their way around the country like that. B/c at the end of the day, that's what it's all about, 'learning your way around this country.' understanding how things work! the pool of artist in this culture who've understood that concept is very small; along w/ jay, master p, diddy and now 50 cent probably are the only emecees, good, bad, or indifferent regarding talent, who've understood this concept and made a valid effort to make the transition. And, as far as the new album, the american gangster', it's a mixture between reasonable doubt and blue print. I believe jay's decision to do this 'american gangster' project was just an excuse for him to display his skills in an environment where he generally shines the most and feels most comfortable. Jay usually does his best storytelling, which is the true essense of what hip hip really is, when he's rapping about hustling, the dope game and the day to day to street grind of making ends meet. He needed an excuse to rap about these topics at this stage in the game and simultaneously maintain his corporate mistique, which was good forward thinking on jay's part as a business man. So, you have to pay homage

Wow cant really understand why we (people of color) wont back a black man/woman success. We should be proud to have someone of color succeed. That’s if they are humble about the blessing that was bestowed upon them. So, speaking from the outside looking in jay is that (humble). Cant and wont bash a brother or sister for being blessed. Damn, wish i had a bit of that success… so do you jay do you….
