Kanye’s Mother Passed Away, Details Unknown
Monday, November 12, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Dr. Donda West, mother of Kanye West, has passed away, according to a spokesperson for the rapper. She was 58.
West died on Saturday night in Los Angeles, although the cause of death has not been released.
“The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief,” said the spokesperson, who asked for anonymity because not all family members had been notified at the time.
Rhymefest, an affiliate and writing partner for Kanye, appeared on Chicago’s radio station WCGI yesterday to discuss the unfortunate news.
“She was everyone’s mom,” said Rhymefest, explaining that Kanye called him on Sunday morning to tell him the news. “A spirit never dies, a spirit lasts forever.”
Kanye was reportedly in London when told of his mother’s death and was en route back to the United States shortly afterwards.
Donda West, who served as Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University, retired in 2004 after 18 years in the academic world in order to help manage her son’s music career.
She recently authored a book, titled “Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar,” and was also the Chair of the Kanye West Foundation, which raises education awareness and aims to keep students from dropping out of school.
