Tuesday, November 20, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
An upcoming film based on the Juice Crew, the Queens-based rap collective from the 1980s, is in pre-production as cast members are being chosen for the roles of MC Shan, Marley Marl, Biz Markie, and others.
The movie, titled “The Vapors,” will be set in New York’s Queensbridge Housing Projects during the mid-eighties when the group originated.
As one of hip-hop’s first collective crews, the Juice Crew included notable artists Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, Craig G, and TJ Swan.
Actress Keke Palmer, from the 2006 film “Akeelah and the Bee,” has been picked to play Roxanne Shante, the group’s only female rapper.
Meanwhile actor Clifton Powell has been cast for the role of DJ Mr. Magic, the popular radio host famous for his WBLS show “Rap Attack.”
“The Vapors” is due to begin production in January, and will be directed by Furqaan Clover – who recently finished filming “Queen of Media,” a drama starring Robin Williams and based on the biography of gossip radio host Wendy Williams.
