[Update] Duck Down Records Inks Deal with YOUTUBE
Thursday, December 6, 2007 By: Michael Ivey
According to a source close to the label, Duck Down Records front-man Buckshot has been commissioned, through sonic branding outfit Man Made Music, to compose an original theme song and promo music for The History Channel's popular show, "Gangland." Buckshot's original, Dirty Elegance produced tone-setter also morphs into alternative versions, one of which is performed by lauded rapper/actor Ice-T.
Duck Down Records has reportedly also secured, through wildly sucessful Internet video sharing site www.youtube.com, the Duck Down Record Channel, an outlet for it's music videos, comedy skits and behind the scenes coverage.
"A few years ago (during our Triple Threat campaign) we were phasing videos out, because there were so few outlets for them to air, that it did not justify the expense," says Duck Down Co-Owner Dru Ha. "...While national TV networks like MTV and BET may not offer us coverage, YOUTUBE allows us to put our visuals in front of millions of people. I mean Sean Price has his own episode of MTV Cribs and Punk'd on the Duck Down /YOUTUBE Channel."
As previously reported on this site, Duck Down is prepping the release of Buckshot and heralded producer 9th Wonder's second collaborative LP, 'Formula,' due in March 2008. A visual for the project's lead single "No Doubt," which features 'ChappelleShow' standout Charlie Murphy doing comedy skits, is in production. Behind the scenes footage from the making of "No Doubt," Kidz in the Hall's new LP, 'The In Crowd,' and 'Formula' are slated to air on Youtube's Duck Down Records Channel.'Formula' will be wholey produced by 9th Wonder and includes guest spots by Talib Kweli, Raheem Devaughn and Tyler Woods.
In addition to Duck Down's new media marriages, which include an exclusive deal with ESPN, the label has reportedly re-aquired the services of surly duo Heltah Skelta (Ruck & Rock). Ruck, AKA Sean Price, has been key in reviving interest in the label since the launching of it's Triple Threat Campaign (2005), however, "Monster Man Rocko" (Rock) just reunited with the team, after a long hiatus, for 2006's posse LP 'The Last Stand.'
"There is no denying that Sean Price has re-invented himself as one of the premier solo artists in the game, but his legacy is also that of one-half of Heltah Skeltah," says Buckshot of the reunion. Heltah Skelta and Duck Down are prepping thepairs' third LP, 'D.I.R.T.' (Da Incredible Rap Team), for a summer 2008 release. So far production duties reportedly land with Marco Polo, Evidence and Nottz.
"Fans can expect that real gritty Heltah Skeltah feel," says Buckshot. "Trust me these two will not disappoint."
