Dr. Dre Dodges Detroit Lawsuit
Wednesday, December 12, 2007 By: Michael Ivey
Aftermath Records CEO/hip hop pioneer Dr. Dre recently avoided further litigation when a Michigan Judge dismissed the lawsuit filed by three former Detroit city officials against the producer/rapper.
“Under the circumstances, the plaintiffs could not have a reasonable expectation of privacy,” said Wayne County Circuit Judge John A. Murphy in his ruling. Greg Bowens (spokesman to then-Mayor Dennis Archer), then-police spokeswoman Paula Bridges and then-police Cmdr. Gary Brown claim they were in July 2000 unlawfully videotaped asking ‘Up In Smoke’ concert producers not to air a video segment containing nudity at the then-upcoming concert in Joe Louis Arena.
The former officials filed suit against Dr. Dre after reportedly hearing the “private” conversation on the ‘Up In Smoke’ DVD, claiming they were taped without their consent. Judge Murphy granted Dre’s lawyers’ motion to dismiss the case despite at an October hearing saying the case would likely go to trial.
Glenn Oliver, attorney for the former Detroit officials, says he’ll appeal the decision and claims that hidden cameras illegally recorded his clients. The case has been dismissed three separate times in the state of Michigan.
Dr. Dre reportedly will release ‘Detox,’ the long awaited follow up to ‘Chronic 2001,’ in June 2008.
