Jay-Z Plans To Open Hotel In Manhattan
Tuesday, December 18, 2007 By: Kenny Rodriguez
As if the music and clothing industry weren’t enough, Jay-Z is now venturing into the hotel business with the announced launch of a new spot in downtown Manhattan.
Jay has purchased a development site in the Chelsea neighborhood to build a 150,000 square-foot luxury hotel, aptly called “The J-Hotel.”
As the first of its kind, the proposed five-star hotel will serve as the flagship for a chain expected to expand into other major cities.
The site was secured by Jay-Z and partners Charles Blaichman of CB Developers, Abram Shnay and Scott Shnay of SK Development Group in two separate transactions.
The acquisition of the base site was $51 million, and the price of the air rights was $15.4 million – totaling $66.4 million.
The J-Hotel will be located in downtown Manhattan, at 511 West 21st St. between 10th and 11th avenues.
Currently the site is occupied by a five-story warehouse and parking facility leased to Time Warner Cable. No word yet on when construction is scheduled to begin.
