DMX Planning Rugged Gospel For Bodog Music Debut
Thursday, January 3, 2008 By: Michael Ivey
Ten years after bombarding hip hop with incomparable vigor, Yonkers rapper DMX reportedly will serve up his first double album, one half gutter, the other half gospel rap.
"A double album will make mutha----as mad, because they gotta spend more money — plus it's already a long [double] album,” DMX says in a recent online interview. Despite the financial inconvenience, and the fact that CDs are going the way of the cassette tape, X is confident that ‘Walk With Me Now and You’ll Fly With Me Later’ will add to his historic platinum legacy.
X fans are used to him waxing spiritual ("Lord Give Me a Sign," "A Minute for Your Son,” "The Prayer") but when asked why he decided to do an entire Gospel disc X says, "I just go with the flow." The Ruff Ryder pillar says a different part of the new albums’ title will be highlighted on the respective discs. Independent label Bodog Music, known for online gambling and promoting mixed martial arts fights, will distribute the LP.
X’s in-house production team will provide beats for ‘Walk With Me…’ as will long time collaborators Swizz Beatz, PK and Dame Grease. X, years ago, reportedly considered pulling a Mase-leaving the music industry for ministry-but decided to stick with entertainment. He tried to follow five consecutive platinum Def Jam releases with ‘Year of The Dog’ in 2006 but scrapped the project due to creative differences with the then Jay-Z/LA Reid lead label. Later that year X moved to Columbia/Sony, which released his first underground single in the early nineties.
"Sony turned out to be phony,” says X; he claims that singles for ‘Year Of The Dog…Again,’ (8/1/06) were sabotaged by the label.
"It was supposed to be three different broads on the hook: Amerie, Keyshia Cole and my artist Shan. Each one was gonna have their own hook. [Sony] put Amerie on there and left [everybody else out].” X was also displeased by Sony’s release of ‘Now! 22’ the same week as his LP; ‘Now! 22’ beat out ‘Year Of The Dog…Again’ by a reported 1,000 copies to grab Billboards’ #1 spot, denying X a sixth consecutive Billboard #1.
At press time there is no release date for ‘Walk With Me Now…’ but X says Bodog made him financially secure and gives him the option of expanding: “Not soft drinks, I'm not talking about sneakers — I'm talking about fights!"
