Pete Rock Rolls with Jim Jones For ‘NYs’ Finest’

Monday, January 14, 2008
By: Michael Ivey

Pete RockGame shaping producer Pete Rock shows love to the human hip hop sample James Brown (‘Hell’) on the cover of ‘NY’s Finest,’ his freshest New York beat set.

Jim Jones and Dipset affiliate Max B rap beside Pete on the albums’ lead single, “We Roll;” other notable guest spots include Styles P and Sheek Louch (“914”), Raekwon, Masta Killa, Papoose, Little Brother, and Redman. The “Chocolate Boy Wonder” behind acclaimed duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth, underground collective The UN, and an entire foundation of producer-driven hip hop music releases ‘NY’s Finest’ February 26.

“I called it [NY’s Finest] because I feel like that’s me,” says the Jamaican beatsmith. “I’m one of New York’s finest producers.” Industry power player DJ Green Lantern is the only producer besides Pete Rock who graces the album. Indie label Nature Sounds (Masta Killah, MF Doom) reserves distribution rights for ‘NYs Finest.’ Pete Rocks’ last LP, ‘The Surviving Elements: From Soul Survivor II Sessions,’ (BBE Records/Rapster, 2005) was released, in part, to protest BBE’s unauthorized, according to Pete, release of ‘Soul Survivor II,’ (2004).

Pete claims the label bypassed certain sample clearances and put the instrumental album out without his permission.

Jimmy is talented, i cant stand his negative foul stinking up the place attitude in the game but as for rocking over beats and just his appeal to the rhyme, dude got talent. Pete proably feels dude like that. What gonna do.

Jimmy is terrible, i mean really bad...his rhymes are so simple, i'm the best...have ya'll forgotten about me!!

The simplicity of jim jones' rhymes highlights the depth of the man. Knowing that us mere mortals will never fully conceptualise his teachings, jim jones translates his profound thoughts into "easy-to-manage-bite-size-treats" so that the mass market may assimilate the depth of his insight.

Pete rock is the real soul survivor. And the best hip hop producer that ever step foot in the whole rap game. Soul brother #1 for life.
