Asylum’s Shawty Lo Got Illegal Units In The City
Monday, February 11, 2008 By: Michael Ivey
The streets and Internet sites are a step ahead of D4L member Shawty Lo ("Dey Know") and Asylum/Warner Bros.-bootleg copies of Shawty’s ‘Units In The City’ (February 26) are available across the country.
"Some of my new material was taken from my studio and bootlegged but what people don't know is that they don't have the real deal," says Shawty in a recent statement.
"They're cheating themselves." Shawty Lo in 2005 made waves with the sonically big "I’m Da Man" (‘Down For Life’) then he released two mixtapes of the same name (w/DJ Scream) in order to prep/accumulate buyers for ‘Units In The City.’
"…If it's out there, people are gonna buy it, they're gonna want it because he's hot in the streets," says veteran Atlanta DJ and Big Oomp Records store retailer DJ Jelly. According to Shawty, bootleg buyers will miss out on new material if they don’t purchase an official copy of ‘Units In The City’ from an authorized retailer. "Dey Know" made Billboards’ Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart in October, and last week the song peaked at #13. “Dey Know” reached Billboards’ Hot 100 late last month and is slowly creeping up from it’s lower rungs.
