TVT Records Folds, Uncertain Future For Artists
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 By: Kenny Rodriguez
TVT Records – once home to Lil Jon, Pitbull, and the Ying Yang Twins – has announced it will be folding after filing for bankruptcy this week, according to label president Steve Gottlieb.
The New York-based label has fought several legal battles in recent years, including a lawsuit against Def Jam over an unreleased Ja Rule album from 2001, and later with Slip-N-Slide Records over a Pitbull LP.
According to a press release, the label made the move “in order to address urgent financial challenges and to support its future development,” and it plans to “continue to market and promote its current projects and schedule upcoming releases.”
There is no word yet on whether Lil Jon’s album, “Crunk Rock,” will still be released on the label, despite being postponed since 2006. However, other projects by Pitbull and the Ying Yang Twins are still underway.
Meanwhile, affiliate company TVT Music Publishing has announced it will not be closing its doors.
TVT was founded in 1985, and although it became famous for releasing music by rock groups Nine Inch Nails and KMFDM, in the mid-1990s its roster included rappers Mic Geronimo and Ja Rule (under the group Cash Money Click).
More recently, the label was home to artists Yo Gotti, Teedra Moses, Lumidee, Jacki-O, and 213 (Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and Nate Dogg).
