Brooklyn Rapper Cast As Biggie In Film
Monday, March 10, 2008 By: Kenny Rodriguez
After months of searching for an actor to play the late Notorious B.I.G. in an upcoming film, a fellow Brooklyn rapper has been cast in the starring role.
Jamal Woolard, also known as Gravy, was selected to play Biggie Smalls in the anticipated movie, “Notorious,” due out next year.
“Finding B.I.G. was a task in itself and I’m honored that so many young men came out to audition for the role,” said the late rapper’s mother, Voletta Wallace.
“However, it was Jamal’s charming personality, warm spirit, wonderful sense of humor, and beautiful smile that won my heart.”
Despite years in the mixtape scene, Gravy gained short-lived fame in April 2006 when he was shot outside of New York’s Hot 97 radio station.
Surprisingly, the wounded rapper still attended an on-air interview that night with DJ Funkmaster Flex, only to have his music banned by the station due to the shooting incident.
Other actors cast in the film include Derek Luke (“Antwone Fisher”) as producer Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, Angela Bassett (“How Stella Got Her Groove Back”) as Voletta Wallace, and Anthony Mackie (“We Are Marshall”) as rap rival Tupac Shakur.
“Notorious” will begin production later this month, and is expected to hit theaters in early 2009.
