Tony Yayo Promotes Literacy, Teen’s Mother Outraged
Tuesday, March 11, 2008 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Tony Yayo has announced he is joining the fight against teen illiteracy – but while the G-Unit artist sees it as charity, one mother is calling it an “outrage.”
Yayo, born Marvin Bernard, is helping to launch a community book tour in New York City as part of his court-ordered community service, stemming from a guilty plea for the assault of a teenager.
The 29-year-old rapper allegedly smacked a 14-year-old boy in a 2007 incident, and the teen’s mother, Cynthia Reed, is speaking out against Yayo’s supposed charity work.
“It is irresponsible that Mr. Yayo is being presented as a role model to the same people he victimized and plead guilty in a court of law to having assaulted,” Reed said in a press statement.
Reed also blames the Book Bank Foundation, a non-profit organization which helps homeless youth, and its founder Glenn Toby for agreeing to work with Yayo.
“Shame on you, Glen Toby, for letting Marvin Bernard’s punishment look like willful charity,” Reed said.
A few months ago, Yayo initially denied all charges against him, but this past February he pled guilty to harassment and was ordered to complete 10 days of community service.
And although he admits to being there when an associate hit the teen, Yayo insists he rushed to the boy’s side to help him.
Yayo is scheduled to visit various schools and homeless shelters in New York until the end of this week.
