Diddy, Shyne Face Lawsuit Over 1999 Shooting
Thursday, March 20, 2008 By: Kenny Rodriguez
Puff Daddy’s past may be catching up with him – rap mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is heading to court for a $130 million civil lawsuit stemming from a 1999 shooting that sent former protégé Shyne to prison.
Natania Reuben claims Combs, Shyne and others are responsible for the injuries she suffered from gunshots fired at Club New York almost nine years ago.
Reuben was shot in the face during a scuffle in the now-defunct nightclub in Manhattan.
Shyne, who reportedly fired off several gunshots, was charged and sentenced to 10 years in prison for first-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
Meanwhile, former associate Diddy was acquitted of all charges.
This new lawsuit hopes to reexamine whether Shyne acted independently, or on behalf of Diddy and his Bad Boy Records entourage.
According to Shyne’s legal counsel, Oscar Michelen, the trial will begin as early as 2009 – and it could be the first time that Shyne testifies about the events that took place that night.
During the original trial, Shyne refused to take the stand.
In related news, Shyne – born Jamal Barrow – may be released from prison later this year.
He has already served eight years of his ten-year sentence, and is currently being held in Sullivan Correctional Facility in Woodburn, NY.
According to his attorney, the facility is full of “short timers,” meaning, inmates who are not serving long sentences.
This lawsuit comes just after a Los Angeles Times article recently questioned whether Combs was behind the 1994 assault of former rival Tupac Shakur, which left the rap superstar with five gunshot wounds.
Combs has since denied any involvement in the attack.
