Jay-Z Forms Roc Nation For $150 Million
Thursday, April 3, 2008 By: Mike Ivey Jr.
Rapper and hip hop entrepreneur Jay-Z is reportedly on the verge of signing a label and corporate branding deal, worth approximately $150 million, with concert promotion titan Live Nation.
“Everyone’s trying, b,” Jay-Z comments about the recording industry’s at times frustrated effort to reach consumers in a post-digital age. Under the deal, Live Nation, new home of Madonna and U2, will pony up capital for Jay-Z’s outside ventures, including his own label, music publishing outfit and talent consulting/managing companies. Jay-Z reportedly rakes in some $50 million on the front end-fees for his current “Heart Of The City” tour with Mary J. Blige-and an advance of $10 million per option for at least three albums during the 10-year deal. The mogul, co-owner of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets, will reportedly hand over unspecified publishing, licensing and other rights in exchange for another $20 million.
Jay-Z is currently on tour with R&B/Hip Hop soul diva Mary J. Blige. The percussive leak “Ain’t I”, produced by Timbaland, is his newest available track. Jay-Z’s tenth studio album ‘American Gangsta’ last year earned the rapper second place in Billboard #1s next to Elvis Presley. Aligning all of a hitting making artists’ business affairs under one umbrella is a prudent way “to reach the consumer in so many different ways right now,” says Jay-Z.
