Nas’ ‘Nigger’ to Emerge Third Quarter
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 By: Mike Ivey Jr.
Hip hop trend setter Nas and Def Jam will reportedly unveil the Queens, NY artists’ second label release, the caustic ‘Nigger,’ July 1 as opposed to this month. “Be A Nigger Too,” available this week, is one of the first records attributed to the new LP to leak online and through mixtapes.
Nas drew scathing criticism and much press when months ago he announced the follow up to last years’ ‘Hip Hop Is Dead’ movement would be predicated on one of the most controversial words in American history; Nas, his wife, pop singer Kelis, and associates, at the 2008 Grammy awards in Los Angeles donned “Nigger” T-shirts and jackets to show resolve amidst industry insiders and fans who don’t think Def Jam/Universal will promote or sell ‘Nigger.’
“Be A Nigger Too” is produced by Salaam Remi and Big Jack. The song explores the media’s impact on peoples’ perception of the word nigger, pardons Eminem for saying nigger and satirizes peoples’ desire to “be a nigga too” despite the historic plight of black people. At press time there’s no word on features or the production lineup for ‘Nigger."
