Skillz Preempts July LP w/Free Concept Mixtape
Friday, May 16, 2008 By: Mike Ivey Jr.
Days after KOCH Records announces the July release of Skillz’s first album in five years Mr. Yearly Rap-Up offers a free download of his tribute mixtape ‘Design of a Decade, The 90’s.’
“So I came up with this idea to do a mixtape series on decades of music,” says Skillz in a recent blog entry. “I had to start with the 90’s cuz that music influenced me the most.” J. Period and Aphilliates Music Group pillar Don Cannon host the project. The track titles are initialed in order to maintain an element of surprise for the listener. With ‘Million Dollar Backpack’ about two months from dropping, Skillz says “look out for future volumes cuz I can do these joints all day long!!”
Apparently Skillz, known for is wit and broad industry perspective on the yearly “Rap Up” series, listens to one artist per week while driving.
“Like last week I listened to Eric B & Rakim all week long, every song, every album,” says Skillz. “It helps to inspire me ya know?” Ironically, the rapper who comments on every newsworthy, pop item in hip hop feels uninspired listening to the radio.
“Picture me rapping over Lollipop right now?? LOL, aint happening homie!” Below is a tentative track-list for ‘Million Dollar Backpack,’ due in retail July 8.
Working Track-listing:
1. Million Dollar Backpack (Intro)
2. Where I Been
