Nas Changes Album Title, To Drop In July
Tuesday, May 20, 2008 By: Kenny Rodriguez
After months of speculation, Nas has made a last-minute decision to change the name of his upcoming album from “N*gger” to the self-titled “Nas” – according to a representative from Def Jam Recordings.
The Queens rapper sparked controversy last year when he announced that his next album would be called the ‘N-word,” even claiming in several interviews that he isn’t concerned whether it sells or not.
But despite support from Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid, chairman of Island Def Jam Music Group, Nas told MTV News last week that he was still facing pressure to change the album’s name.
“Everybody is trying to stop the title … Record stores are going to have a problem in this day and time selling a record with that title. Who knows what’s going to turn out and be on that title? Who knows what that title will be?”
In related news, Nas recently stated that the LP will feature a guest appearance by up-and-comer Jay Electronica, who has gained a cult-like following from online fans.
“When I met Jay Electronica,” Nas recalled, “he handed me a CD and said, You gotta hear this one song.”
“I put it in the car, and he did ‘The World Is Yours’ over. The way he flipped it was crazy. I called him immediately and was like, Where you at?”
“Jay Electronica is the future. He’s what rappers are trying to be or what they are aspiring to be. He’s the whole package.”
According to reports, the album will also feature Dead Prez, Rick Ross, and the LOX – as well as production by Salaam Remi, Jermaine Dupri, DJ Toomp, and No I.D.
It is now scheduled to hit stores on July 1.
