Saigon Leaves Atlantic After Album Stalled
Friday, May 23, 2008 By: Kenny Rodriguez
After years of album delays, Saigon is finally parting ways with Atlantic Records and treading the indie route for his debut, “The Greatest Story Never Told.”
The Brooklyn-born rapper first signed to Atlantic in 2004, only to have his unreleased album postponed for over three years.
A few days ago, Saigon leaked a new track, “Believe It,” and he has announced several upcoming videos which he will now release as a free agent.
“I’m not excited about going to a major label,” Saigon told Billboard magazine. “They would have to make it so I’m set for the rest of my life. They want too much for the little that they’re giving.
“It’s not like I didn’t want to put out music. But Atlantic wanted me to do ringtone songs, but they didn’t sign me as a ringtone artist.”
He also spoke on his 2007 single, “Pain In My Life,” which was a commercial flop, peaking at No. 97 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
“They gave me $18,000 to shoot the video for ‘Pain In My Life,’ and I’m seeing Plies get $100,000 and Lupe [Fiasco] get $150,000. What the f*ck? Those artists are friends of mine, but now I’m happier than I’ve been in a minute.”
No word yet on a release date for “The Greatest…,” although sources say it will still hit stores this summer.
